New Jersey is experiencing a heat wave with temperatures expected to approach 100 degrees. The heat index, which factors in humidity, is predicted to climb to between 93 and 98 degrees in the 18 counties under a heat advisory. This marks the official start of a heat wave, defined as three consecutive days of temperatures exceeding 90 degrees.
The heat wave is expected to last through the weekend, with the most uncomfortable days likely to be Saturday and Sunday. During this period, inland temperatures could soar into the mid-to-upper 90s, with the heat index potentially reaching 105.
Air quality remains poor, posing a risk to individuals with respiratory issues. Residents are advised to exercise caution when going outdoors. The only areas likely to escape the high temperatures are the immediate coast along the Jersey Shore and parts of Atlantic, Cumberland, and Cape May counties.
Despite the intense heat, record highs for June 20 appear to be out of reach. Newark Liberty International Airport and Trenton Mercer Airport would need to reach 98 degrees to tie their daily record highs, and Atlantic City International Airport would have to hit 95 degrees.
The heat wave is expected to ease early next week. Until then, residents are advised to stay updated by checking the National Weather Service website.
